Go behind the sign to Gower Gulch! In the early days of movieland, Los Angeles was full of real-life cowboys, and the cowpokes looked to earn cash by being extras in the Hollywood Westerns being made. The corner of Sunset and Gower was the perfect place for these cow punches to hang out due to its proximity to the movie studios. At the intersection of Sunset and Gower, a couple of cowboys engaged in an unscripted and deadly standoff in 1940, sending one to the morgue and the other to trial on homicide charges.
