The Divine Master Plan
A month before Divine's death in March 1988, the film "Hairspray" is released, and the performer's dreams of becoming a "respected" actor were finally coming true. He's lands a guest role on the 90s TV series "Married... With Children." The day before his death, he spends it rehearsing for his appearance at Sunset Gower Studios (1438 N Gower St.). Divine stays at the Regency Plaza Suites Hotel in Los Angeles (7940 Hollywood Blvd. - the hotel is demolished in '07) and enjoys dinner with some friends at the hotel's restaurant. Afterward, he retires to his room, where he dies in his sleep. Divine suffers from an enlarged heart due to obesity. He is only 42 when he dies. His body is flown back to Maryland, where he is buried. One of the wreaths at his gravesite is sent by Whoopi Goldberg. It bears the remark: "See what happens when you get good reviews."
OUTFEST OPENING NIGHT
On our way to opening night of OUTFEST to watch the documentary βCircus of Books.β Circus of Books was the first place that was willing to sell my zines. I remember the owner, Karen Mason, saying, βWhy are you doing this? Thereβs no money in zines.β π I found her candor refreshing and inspiring. Circus of Books gave me the courage and confidence to create. 2 years and 15 issues later, here we are.

Last night I was working on the upcoming zine "Dead in Hollywood: The Crucifixion of George Michael (Issue #11) when I spilled a glass of water on my laptop, frying it. I lost everything! Or so I thought. Spending three dollars a month on iCloud storage space turned out to be quite the bargain. The laptop was not so lucky. I'm still hoping to finish the issue before the L.A. Zine Fest on May 26th. I pray to George Michael that I will. "The Crucifixion of George Michael" will focus on Michael's arrest on April 8, 1998, for a "lewd act" in a public restroom in a Beverly Hills park, forcing the pop icon out of the closet. Michael's helped me come to terms with my own sexuality. At 13, my conservative, Trump-loving uncle bought me Michael's "Faith" album for Christmas. He's never really spoken to me after I came out years later in 1998. It's not just pop icons and mythical religious figures who are shunned and crucified. BTW, that uncle also introduced me to En Vogue's "Funky Divas" album on a road trip to Mexico when I was 14. Maybe I'll send him a copy of the zine when I'm finished. Deathiversary Part 2: Rock Hudson
Throughout his career, numerous magazines declared Rock Hudson "Star of the Year" and βFavorite Leading Man.β Hudson appeared in nearly 70 films and starred in several television productions during a career that spanned more than four decades. In 1956 he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Giant" - alongside James Dean. Hudson died from AIDS-related complications in 1985, becoming the first major celebrity to die from an AIDS-related illness.
